Understanding the Types of Complex Boring

When the boring process moves beyond simply enlarging a pre-drilled hole, complex boring methods are needed. The following is an overview of various complex boring techniques.

Advanced Material Jig Boring is utilized for the exotic alloys used in the aerospace and defense industries, requiring unique cutting parameters, tooling, and thermal management strategies.

Blind Bottom Boring can drill a hole to a specific depth when the bottom of the hole is not accessible. It requires specialized tools and precise control to ensure the hole is the correct size and depth without breaking through the bottom.

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Boring produces tight tolerances and specific surface finishes for complex parts. Because it is a computer-controlled machine, CNC boring is able to create and enlarge with exact precision and accuracy.

Line Boring enlarges and realigns existing holes where holes have become misaligned or worn, adversely affecting equipment performance and structural integrity.

Pattern Boring is used when multiple, precisely located holes are required. It produces a series of holes in complex shapes or configurations in a specific pattern.

Step Boring produces parts with multiple components or specific geometric requirements. It requires multiple cutting tools or inserts at different depths and diameters on a single boring bar to produce a hole with different diameters or features along its length.

Trepanning cuts a ring-shaped groove, leaving a core in the center to produce large diameter holes or bores.
