The Checklist of Boring Machining Fundamentals

A boring project that meets all the specified requirements of enlarging a pre-drilled hole starts with knowing the fundamentals. While experienced machinists are well-versed in these boring basics, the beginning operator will find this six-step checklist helpful.

ONE: Setting Boring Tool Alignment to the Pre-existing Hole

The first step is not just a step, it's a crucial foundation: aligning the tool and hole. This step is the bedrock that secures the workpiece, preventing any movement that could lead to misalignment.

TWO: Selecting the Boring Tool

When choosing the boring tool, consider the material of the workpiece and the finish. It must be the correct size and be able to cut the specific material efficiently.

THREE: Establishing the Cutting Speed and Feed Rate

The proper cutting speed and feed rate are not just numbers, they are the exact balance based on the type of tool, the hardness of the material, and the exactness of the cut. This balance is crucial to avoid tool damage (too fast) or a poor finish (too slow).

FOUR: Making the Cut

To make the cut in the existing hole, the machinist mounts the boring tool on the boring bar and proceeds with a linear movement into the hole to precisely remove material. This process enlarges the hole diameter while improving its finish.

FIVE: Controlling Depth and Diameter

To correctly control the cut’s depth and the hole’s final diameter, the operator must be vigilant and monitor the process. This practice allows the machinist to adjust parameters, creating a new hole and finish that meet specifications.

SIX: Applying Coolant

Choosing and applying the proper coolant reduces heat build-up and prevents both malforming the material and tool.
