Finish Boring

The process of finish boring requires an existing hole, and it is the perfect process for short-run jobs to remove the remaining stock in the hole. Finish boring offers more flexibility when machining different hole sizes using the same tool. Adjusting the boring head can compensate for the runout if the machine tool has more runout at the spindle. Also, a finish boring head can true up a hole more accurately than other applications.

Machinists operating finish boring operations need to pay closer attention to details than other processes and cutting tools required. Practicing established procedures will help ensure that the project's specifications are met. For example, be sure the workpiece materials are correctly supported, minimize unsupported tool length, and the largest-diameter tool should be used. Finally, the operator can reduce chatter by adjusting tool pressure.

Generally, finish boring heads achieve tolerances within IT5 and surface finishes above Ra 1 micron, providing high hole quality. Feed time is a drawback with a finish boring head because of its single cutting tooth. Another issue with one tooth cutting is that tool life is typically less than other cutting processes, and wear on the insert can adversely affect the size and finish quality.

Holes that require exact tolerances need fine boring tools that can be accurately adjusted in increments as small as 0.0001". Fine boring heads can have basic round boring bars, while others require special insert holders. The expense of these tools means they are often reserved for boring holes with diametric tolerances less than 0.001".
