Tips for the Best Boring Results

Boring is a different process from other hole making machining operations, such as drilling and reaming. Drilling is making an initial hole and reaming smooths out the walls of an existing hole. Boring is used to produce accurate size holes within required tolerance specifications using an existing pre-drilled hole. The following are some tips to assure your boring project meets your specifications.

Applications

An operator can perform boring with a lathe, mill or machines specific to boring like jig bores, boring machines, or boring mills. Generally, lathe boring operations are less complex and offer more flexibility than boring with a mill.

Tools

Chatter, or a vibration, is common during the boring processes. However, it can cause a quality concern. When you minimize chatter, you get better productivity and surface finishes. Using boring bars and boring heads made from heavier materials can suppress chatter. Additionally, tooled steel, carbide, or tungsten tools will last longer than the less costly steel option.

Heads

It is recommended to use boring heads on a milling machine for larger holes with tight tolerances. The hole size range is set by the boring head. To adjust the hole size, you need to change the boring head size. This makes boring processes on mills more complicated, though more precise, than those on lathes.

Bars

Boring bars are used for both milling and lathe operations. Deeper holes need a longer bore than a shallow hole, so the length of the boring bit is critical. Boring bars can create any size hole if the bar fits in the hole. This feature makes boring bars a more flexible option than boring heads because you can achieve different size bores with the same bar.
