What is Boring?

Often a hole in a part needs to be larger. After drilling creates the initial hole in a part the process of boring enlarges a previously drilled or cast hole with a single point cutting tool or boring head. Various tools are used in boring:

  • Awls
  • Gimlets
  • Augers

An awl is the most basic tool to make a hole by pushing material to one side without removing it. Gimlets and augers have cutting edges and make the hole by detaching the material.

Types of Boring Processes

Jig Boring produces an exact and precise diameter and location when enlarging the hole. Because of a Vertical Jig Boring Machine’s capability to make sensitive adjustments to the table and the cutting tool position, it can work within tolerances within ±.005 mm (±0.0002 inches).

Horizontal Boring enlarges the existing hole with a highly accurate cylindrical surface. Drilling and milling work is carried out on a horizontally clamped workpiece with a movable column that carries the spindle headstock with the workpiece receptacle. Table, planer, and floor are three main types of Horizontal Boring. The table type of Horizontal Boring is the most versatile and common of the three.

Vertical Boring uses a rotating piece attached to a large horizontal table. Vertical boring mills can perform many types of services, including turning, boring, facing, tapering, and cutting of internal and external threads.

Line Boring, or  align boring, is a machining process that produces perfectly straight and aligned bores.
